If one person has showed me the fun of learning, it's the physicist, lock-breaker, bongo-player, and artist (among others) noted above. I first stumbled across him in a series of short youtube clips about a decade or so ago (mid 2000s) and though I didn't know it at the time, they began a series of changes in my mindset that has shifted virtually everything about me in a more positive direction. I bring it up now only because I came across a full-length cut of the original videos I watched and I want as many people as possible to see it and experience the sheer joy of thinking about the world in new ways that Feynman seems to convey.

If you watched and enjoyed the video linked above (or didn't), I highly recommend reading the book “Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!”. He has an infectious way of thinking about the world.

I recently stumbled across Austin G. Walters demonstrating some scary software that can de-anonymize people across domains. In wanting to know more about his process, I found a post that echoes similar discussions I've had with my friends on the last free generation. He puts it more directly and with a much better set of supporting evidence than we ever did, but it rings with the same truth. It's not a happy truth.

This site is doing real work to get publicly funded scientific research out to the people who need it and the people who paid for it in the first place. Those who keep this running have faced enormous backlash and lawsuits from for-profit journals and those trying to keep publicly funded research private for their personal gain.

Support Sci-Hub if you can. Either pass on the message of the need to make public research accessible to the public, or donate if you can (or both).
